Hello all! Was wondering if someone could help me with this. I found an SKB XL900 20 gauge for sale that I would like to buy, but the side plates look different than my 12 gauge SKB XL900. The 20 gauge has swirls engraved on the side and my 12 gauge has pheasants and ducks engraved on the sides. Did they make both styles? Does anyone have any information on this?

Thanks in advance!

Yes! That's what the engraving looks like. Can you tell me why they look different?

Yes SKB made two different styles of the XL900. Most were the silver and birds on the receiver. I do believe the swirls were the earlier models. There is no record of SKB model serial numbers and manufacture dates, so there is no firm knowledge of that. I have a XL900 12 gauge and it has the silver receiver (ducks on one side pheasants on the other) The serial number of mine is S1949823 so if your number is after that, then your model came after, if it is lower then it was before. The XL series was gas operated, before them SKB Ithaca made recoil operated semis and they were 900 and 300 without the XL. There was a type one and a type two. Different scenes also (Ducks and geese, pheasants and rabbits. They used gold colour on them. You have a good gun. Enjoy

I found out by doing a little research online that my gun is a XL900 Skeet Grade. Oh, I did buy it yesterday at a local gun shop for $265.00. I thought that was a pretty good price. I plain on cleaning it this weekend. I'm pretty excited about it.
