What particular brands are you guys using in your shotguns...!?

Right now I have 250 rounds of 2 3/4" Nobel Sport Law Enforcement 12 pellet with a muzzle velocity of 1,290 fps...

...and 250 rounds of 2 3/4" Sellier & Bellot 9 pellet with a muzzle velocity of 1,180 fps.

Both are well suited for personal defense as well as hunting small size game from my double (side by side) and pump action 12 gauge shotguns.

What brand 00 Buck do you use...and why ?!

I never had an occasion to buy buckshot. Here in PA, the largest you can use for small game and turkey is No. 4 shot, and you can only use slugs for big game (buckshot is specifically prohibited).

Do you really use 00 buckshot for small game? I would think that wouldn't leave much left of a rabbit.

I generally cast and load my own, but at a gun store recently there was 3 boxes of Remington 3" Magnum 15 pellet OO buck on sale and I snatched them up. Actually I prefer buck and ball loads in my Deer Slayer smoothbore, the magnum buck loads are for my 20" defense barrel.

I use Gambore Buffalo 32g OO for this:

I also use it in my M37 DSPS (when it isn't broken).

I use Gamebore because [a] it's available locally (although I have to order it by the slab) and [b] it's cheap...

In the UK, there's little demand for buck and even less for slug.

Regards,

Mark.

The small game I was refering to was not to be harvested for food...I'm talking about groundhog, skunk, racoon, possum...basic garden variety pests that are to be dispatched because of their destructive habits. I take squirrel and rabbit with a .177 air rifle...

Ah, my mistake. When people say "small game" I think of things like rabbits, pheasants, and squirrels. The varmints you mentioned are referred to by the game commission as "furbearers."

I just noticed you are located in PA as well. You should know, hunting furbearers (which includes raccoons, foxes, coyotes, opossums, skunks, and weasels) with anything larger than No. 4 buckshot is technically prohibited. Also, hunting groundhogs (which are considered small game, and not furbearers) with anything larger than No. 4 shot is also technically prohibited. I doubt you would ever get into trouble for shooting troublesome varmints on your own land, but you never know.

I'm quite aware of the Pennsylvania hunting, furbearer, and trapping seasons...and the ammo regulations...my friend is a PA Game Warden.

Thank you for your concern...and enjoy the forum !

Just to keep the discussion going, what was the barrels on the old Ithaca DS LAPD Models, and what were the LAPD using for ammo? Were the barrels actually Deer Slayer barrels with .700 bores like the commercial barrels? Ithaca advises shot not to be used in these barrels.

I'll have to look in Walt's book on the 37 again, but don't remember seeing bore dimensions or ammo used by the LA PD listed.

After checking Walt's book again and posting on shotgunworld, it seems the LAPD DS barrels had the standard DS bores and were used with slugs, shot, and door breaching ammunition.
