whatever happened to the Model 49 saddlegun-a great .22 rimfire single shot with lever action? I sure would like to see it come back.

The rifle was discontinued many years ago both in its single shot and repeater versions. It was replaced for a short while with the Model 72 repeater, but that too was discontinued many years ago.

Do you have one of these rifles?

I don't think it was the m49 ,more likely the later m72 ,
but I believe that the henry 22 is based on the patent

The 49R I have been told was a bit of a problem for the Ithaca Gun Co. You either got one that worked or did not. Walt Snyder once posted that the factory eventually deemed the guns irreparable. The 72 was actually imported from Germany as a replacement to the 49R, and as stated above later went on to become the Henry.

The Ithaca 49R that I had ,as stated above had the ejection problem.

I talked to Ron Sharpe over the phone about the rifle and he told me basically just what 1977cutcher said. They are a nice little rifle and I really liked mine except for the ejection problems and that the finger lever was too small for use in cold weather with gloves or mittens. It was light and accurate and I liked the top ejection. If Ithaca were to come out with another one with a larger finger lever, top ejection and the ejection problem looked after I would have to buy one.

The Ithaca Model 72 I owned worked perfectly.

Boy Ron Sharp is a really knowledgeable person with Ithacas. He has such a huge stock of parts. I am trying to fix the ejection problem on my 49 and I just am putting the 49R back together after bluing it, and doing the wood. The 72 works great and it is the fancy one with the silver receiver. I don't have a problem with the lever size as I don't hunt or shoot with gloves, and it is dam near impossible to reload the little 22 shell into the single shot 49. They do shoot pretty accurate though! I have a bunch of dead beer cans to prove it! Donald

Donald, being able to hunt without gloves on you must live in a nice warm place or do not hunt in cold weather. :) In the early part of the hunting season I can hunt without gloves or mittens, but for sure ,not in the later part. :)

I live in the south west corner of BC six miles from the Ocean and USA border and about 20 miles from downtown Vancouver. It really doesn't get very cold here. Just wet. Good duck weather.
