He trapped black bear from 1901 to 1920 when it was outlawed in the mountains of Tioga County, Pa. The meat was sold to the lumber crews for stew, and the hides went to Williamsport to be sold. He used mostly dug-out pits with log traps before raising enough money for steel traps, anyway somewhere along the line he figured a .45 Colt up close was good bear medicine and fine life insurance.

Made by Colt in 1904 this New Service 7.5 inch revolver in .45 Colt caliber was packed many a mile and dispatched quite a few northern Pennsylvania black bear in it's day. It's sighted for 50yds, but still a good shooter, ya just aim a bit low is all.

He was the kind of man, that when it came to firearms anyway, he bought only the best available at the time. His guns included an L.C. Snith double, Winchester 1890 in .22 WRF, Winchester 1892 saddle carbine in .25 WCF, Winchester 1894 rifle in .30 WCF, Winchester 1895 in .30 Gov't 06, and the Colt. These arms were all of the plainest grade, but functioned perfectly and shot well. He was a practical man, and all but the 1892 SRC are still in the family, I don't know where that little carbine is. I think he may have bartered it away at one time.
