The Ithaca Gun Company was known primarily as a company that made high quality shotguns for sporting use. But during World War II they curtailed their civilian production and produced weapons for the United States military forces.
During 1943 through 1945 they made over 330,000 1911A1 .45 automatic pistols. This required a huge expansion of their workforce and they were producing a type of weapon that was unlike anything they had turned out before. Harry Howland, Ithaca's plant manager, was instrumental in designing a trigger for the 1911A1 that was stamped out of sheet metal resulting in lower cost and faster production of the pistol. Here is my Ithaca 1911A1, made in 1944 and shipped to the navy: [img][/img] It has the sheet metal trigger Mr. Howland helped introduce.
