From what I read on the Ithaca site, deerslayer barrels are all rifled now a days, (correct me if I'm wrong). I would like to buy one for my M-37 Magnum Model, but I will want to shoot buckshot more than slugs.

Is a smoothbore Deerslayer barrel currently available? If not, anybody have experence with buckshot in the rifled barrels?..If so, how does it do at say, 25yds?

The new Deerslayer barrels are all rifled. They are designed to be used with slugs only and using buckshot would void any warranty. Have said that, Just get yourself a 26" field barrel and a cylinder bore choke and you have yourself a buckshot barrel. You can get choke from briley at briley.com and they offer a full complement of choke for every gauge of Ithaca's.

BTW Jim, I did almost as you suggested, I ordered a 26" vent rib barrel with a choke set from Ithaca, plus special order blasted dull blue finish to match my gun. I should have it in about a week!

I may still considder a Deerslayer barrel, or something like it in the future...

That's great! They have a couple of rifled barrels now. One with a cantilever and one with the marbles sights. I really like the iron sights they are using. Very precise to 50 yds. Just be sure to check that headspace to be sure.

Will do on the headspace. It surprised me a little that they would only take 10 days to do a special order finish, I expected much longer.

Placed a bid on a 20" Deerslayer barrel. Looks to be one made during the General Recreation years of ownership.

Those smooth bore barrels are really accurate with rifled slugs. I had one on my gun orginally and with the Remington Sluggers 3 inch version I could put five shots through pne hole at 50 yards off of a bench open sights. In reality I never should have sold it but the gentleman who bought it needed it more than I.
