Just inherited a 1959 Model 37 Deerslayer. Anybody know how to tell what the choke is, or are they all the same? And if so, what it is? There is no number after the serial number to indicate choke (the only number I can find is the one on the barrel). If the barrel is made primarily for slugs, can I change barrels?

Thanks

You will find the serial number on the very front of the receiver in between the barrel and magazine tube. If it is above 855,000 you can easily swap out barrels. If it is under 855,000 in all honesty it would be easier and possibly cheaper to buy another gun with the barrel that you like on it. As for choke, slug barrels are basically an improved cylinder.

thanks for the reply

serial number on barrel is in the 700,000"s. that's how i determined is was from 1959. guess it might also be ok for birds or skeet.

Actually it would make a great bird/skeet gun. Home defense, too.
When I picked up my DSPS, I took it to the club and shot a round of skeet with it. It did OK.
I, however, did not. It is a little short for me so I kept shooting high :/

Maybe that's my problem too. I tried shooting some clays and did terribly (used to seldom miss with my Browning "Sweet Sixteen" auto). That's why I was wondering about the choke. Guess I'm the problem.

Don't forget, you also have sights on that thing. You have to lower them or you are going to shoot high.
before I lowered mine, I shot REALLY high.
