Out for another hunt this afternoon.Bagged two more rabbits with the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37.
Could be my last hunt for awhile as we are to get 10 to 40 CM of snow with high wind tonight.That could make getting around in the uplands rather diffucult. |

I have been hunting with it a couple times a week for the last couple weeks. Unfortunately on some of the places I have been going, the coyotes are getting the rabbits and pheasants, so it is more exercising my dog (family pet, got pudgy) than it is getting something. I went to one of the places yesterday, and everywhere that a rabbit would hide, there was coyote tracks in the snow. come summer spring and fall, I have a Ruger 77 ..223 that is going to get exercised a bit thinning out the coyotes

My tally this year was:
28 ruffed grouse 6 sage grouse 6 doves 1 blue grouse 1 spruce grouse Couple dozen squirrels countless Jack rabbits All were taken with my '58 20ga or my Ohio 16ga. I favor the 20ga. |

Seems you have had a great year,uplanddan.
What type of squirrels do you hunt?We have red squirrels but I know of no one who hunts them. Partride(ruffed grouse) were not many in my area this year.We have spruce partridge here but you are not alowed to hunt them.No blue or sage grouse.We have doves but no season on them.What we call rabbits here are really snowshoe hare.Some around but not like in a really good year. |

Fox squirrels, but they are smaller than the Midwestern variety. It was a decent year, but I didn't get out as much as I'd hoped(new baby at the house). Next year should be epic for birds if I don't move home, but that looks inevitable.

How do you cook the fox squirrels?What do they taste like?
From where to where might you have to move for next season?I take it the place you might move to is not as good a place to hunt. How long have you had your Ohio made 16 gauge Model 37?How do you like it?What barel length does it have? |

I was out today trying to get my pet beagle Fanny some more experience and maybe get her on a rabbit. We met an elderly gentleman who had a couple squirrel dogs. He invited me to walk with him and got me a squirrel. The 2nd one hit the ground but the dogs were chasing it too close and I didn't dare take the shot at it.
It was interesting. They ran around the woods looking for squirrels and then stood under the tree looking up, barking to let you know where the squirrel was. So, I have one in the freezer. Courtesy of my 1956 Ithaca 16 ga. The gentleman even made a comment about how nice the gun shot. I let him feel the weight (he was lugging around a big heavy 12ga) and he said it must "kick" hard. I told him nope. The other interesting thing I found was some cat tracks. Showed the guy also. Those tracks made my big dog's tracks look small. Blake and Otto go 120 to 130 lbs (not fat) and the tracks were easily twice the size of Blake's. Maybe 2 1/2 times as big, as big as the palm of my hand. We are getting lots of different critters in the woods in Ohio. We even have a bear close to the house here in the Norton / Wadsworth area |

We cook them whole in the crock or nesco with cream of whatever soup onions mushrooms garlic....... throw in a bunch of goodies and let the meat fall off the bone. We may move back home.........MO We currently live in WY. Lots of great hunting, no people, one of the last true free states. I had my Ohio Ithaca for a few months, but sold it. Too damn heavy! When you hunt the Rockies, you count ounces on ALL of your gear! I will NEVER haul around a 7lb. gun again......... ever! |

I am a 28 gauge fan and like the lightest 28 gauge I can find to use in the uplands.For the most part lots of walking and little shooting.  My 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 is a bit heavier than my other two favourite 28 gauges to use in the uplands a Franchi 48AL and an Aya Model 3A SXS.However there is just someting about the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 that I really enjoy.Its fun to shoot and makes me feel good when carring it. If Ithaca ever comes out with an ultralight version of the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37 weighing at 5 1/2 pounds or less I know one will be heading to Nova Scotia ASAP. Would love to see a new light weight 28 gauge Ithaca SXS (5 to 5 1/2 pounds) introduced.An Upland Hunters Dream.

Sounds like you had a productive and interesting day in the woods,drcook.Always nice to meet some one in the woods and have a yarn with them. Will you eat the squirrel by itself or wait till you bag another one? |

Well the last season (rabbit) ended here on February 28th.Will now have to oil up the Ithacas and put them away till next October.
