28 gauge's Profile
Just wondering how everyone has been doing hunting this season with their Ithaca firearms.
Have not bagged anything yet with my 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37,but have been able to bag three ducks so far with my 12 gauge Ithaca Model 37.One black duck,one greenwing teal and one hooded shellduck.

hasn't really started yet here.
early dove came and went.i was out ,but not really hunting. this season is more a dog training year grouse and woodcock opens the 19th,but i'll treat that as I did dove. unless of course Lilith points a grouse,, then i'll have to shoot. the 26th is the date i'm waiting for.i need to get her on pheasants and lots of em |

Out this morning for about 2 1/2 hours on a short duck hunt.Was able to bag another black duck with the 12 gauge Ithaca Model 37.

each year I choose a gun to put into service for the year.
last year I hunted my 1952 16g. i'm training a pup this year ,and it seems my youngest gun has been selected a 1982 ultra featherlight 20g with a mod choke. I really wanted to use my fathers restored executive model,but 12g is too much over the pup. I been looking local and would love to find a m66 in 410 but no luck, so 20g ultra it is... I must say it been a dream carrying in the grouse woods |

Out this morning for a short duck hunt with the Ithaca Model 37.Was able to bag one widgeon.This was the first widgeon I have ever bagged in all my years of hunting.
Other than the widgeon, I bagged I saw only six black ducks. |

we've been out about a half dozen times today was the only day we failed to see a pheasant.
but she did find a wood cock. i'm kinda hamstrung about what I can shoot since I am only shooting "pointed " birds. wild flushes i'll fire the gun for conditioning reasons. so while the gun is getting use , i'm not aiming it at many birds |

Out this evening for a short hunt.Still no partridge(ruffed grouse),but was able to bag a rabbit (snowshoe hare)with the 28 gauge Ithaca Model 37.

and just how do you practice "Catch and Release" with birds? Do you shoot them and then "Put them Back"? Hehee... Donald

well in this case the pup flushed the quail into a briar hedgerow.
had it cornered under a large fallen pine branch and wasn't coming out till the bird did. I pushed thru the thorns and grabbed it by hand or it was gonna get mauled.. quail are legal depending on where in the state you are however there is no wild quail left. so I cut the little guy loose |

Boy it sounds like your little pup is working out real good. I had a yellow lab years ago that was a great duck dog, then I shot a BIG Canada Goose, I mean BIG. The dog ran over to it, looked at it and ran back, and in her own way said "You get it". She never retrieved a goose after that, but great on ducks. Donald

well its working...
the pup is only 6 mths old so there is a consistency problem more with finding birds then the dog at this point. I don't think she figured out her nose yet either. most bird contact has been by sight not smell so until the switch is flipped everything is in flux. what I really need is a few days in a bird filled field. all in all tho she shows signs of promise and some quirks. I just hope she puts enough together for me to shoot some birds for her |

You might have to resort to shooting squirrels like in your picture. That one would be easy to find. In reality give her some time, and she will figure it out. It is her breed to do that. It is a really big new world for her, right now. Thanks Donald

no fur for her feathers only.
contrary to how it may look there is no pressure on her. my only goal is to put her on birds and let her be a pup. only thing I get on her about is eating turds. if theres any disappointment its not with the pup ,its with me not putting her on more birds |

I cheated
the bird was in heavy briars. she fought her way in and the bird flushed, since she worked hard to reach it I shot it. then she pounced the flopping bird and played keep away. bird size dosent intimidate her, but the cackle of a cockbird does startle her and while its still early gunfire doesn't seem to faze her |
