Make Your Own Cardboard Silhouette Targets

Background:
These silhouette targets approximate the ones you see in IPSC or IDPA.

Dimensions are not exact, as I picked easy to follow dimensions without grossly distorting the basic size. My original intent was to use these for HD / SD type of training. I wasn't worried about any precise scoring, just putting rounds into the important areas.

Cut your own Silhouette Targets from Cardboard:

Tools needed: Tape measure, straight edge, sharp utility knife and a 'Sharpie' style of Indelible Marker.

You will need to make 2 Templates. One template will be the outline of the OverAll Target silhouette. The second template will be used for Tracing the outline of the "Kill Zone" onto a freshly cut new target.

Once you make the 2 templates, it is easy to trace new targets into scrap cardboard, cut them out with a utility knife and straight edge, and trace the Kill Zone.

Making the Over All Target Template

1. Cut a rectangular piece of cardboard 18" wide by 30" tall.

2. The head is centered, 6" from each side, and is 6" tall by 6" wide. Measure and Cut out the 6" x 6" head in the middle at the top of the piece of cardboard.

3. Measure and cut the shoulder angles 2" by 3" and the waist (bottom) angles 3" x 5".

This is your OVER ALL TEMPLATE...

Scoring Area or KILL ZONE template

1. Following the same procedure as with the OverAll Template, cut a piece of Cardboard 12" wide by 24" Tall.

2. Cut out the head, same as before, except this time it's a smaller piece of cardboard, but still has a 6" x 6" head which will fall 3" from each side.

3. Cut the corner angles. Shoulders are 3" by 3" this time , Waist is 3" x 5".

This is your "Kill Zone" TEMPLATE.

How to Make New Targets:

Now that you have the 2 Templates fabricated, the process to make new targets is pretty easy.

Get some scrap cardboard that is at least 18" wide by 30" Tall.

Lay the OverAll Target Template over the scrap cardboard and trace the outline of the OVERALL Template with a Sharpie Marker onto the scrap piece.

(Hint: try to align the bottom edge of the template and one of the sides of the template with 2 edges of your scrap piece, it makes for less cutting.)

Do Not use the OverAll Target Template as a cutting guide, as you might slip and cut into the template. Remove the template and using your utility knife and metal straight edge, cut out the New Target by following the lines you traced.

Once you have a completed cutting out the New Target, place the Kill Zone Template over your freshly made target, aligning the head as reference, and using a Sharpie Marker, trace the outline of the Kill Zone onto the new target.

Hint: You can use standard tan masking tape to tape up holes at the range, to extend the life of each new target for a few more rounds.

Hint 2: If you want more durable Templates, cut them out of Tempered Hardboard found at your local Home Depot or Lowes near the plywood.
